The Sinfonia Mexicana Mariachi Youth Academy is starting new classes for students to learn to read and play music with an emphasis on Mariachi. The highly recognized Youth Academy has been teaching music to students throughout the Inland Empire for over 11 years.
The Academy emphasizes music theory, music reading, the history of mariachi, how to play an instrument, and performance skills. Additionally, the Academy provides students with opportunities to perform at various community events and concert theaters to share the joy of music and uplifting sounds of Mariachi. Along the way, they learn to build confidence, self-discipline, and teamwork.
The instruments in traditional Mariachi are the guitar, vihuela, violin, trumpet, and the guitarron, a bass unique to Mariachi. Students have the opportunity to learn from professional teachers with extensive experience as mariachi teachers and performers in their own right. Classes are small and based on level of music experience – beginning, intermediate, and advanced.
Since its founding, The Academy has been guided by the belief that Music Education is transformative and makes a difference in a student’s academic performance and life. Its emphasis on teaching students to read music provides an unparalleled opportunity to learn Mariachi as well as other music genres.
“Teach your students to read music. If you teach them a song, they will learn that song. If you teach them to read, they will learn a million songs.” (Noe Sanchez)
Over 700 students from San Bernardino, Colton, Rialto and surrounding cities have walked through the Academy doors. “It’s a joy to be able to inspire students and see the spark in a student’s eyes as they learn to read music and perform. We are so proud to see students grow with their music knowing the Academy truly makes a difference in their lives,” stated Maria Saenz, long-time volunteer and supporter.
Students, ages 8 to 20, of all music levels are welcome. No prior music knowledge or experience is required for the beginner class; and students with prior music experience will be evaluated by instructors for placement into intermediate and advanced classes.
Classes start on Tuesday, February 8, 2020 at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts 780 N. E St., San Bernardino. Classes will begin at 5:30 pm. For information please call Lourdes at 951-235-4195.
