LOMA LINDA >> The Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House, a facility located across the street from LLUMC dedicated to keeping families together in times of medical struggle by offering temporary housing, knows this all too well which is why, every year, they recognize local leaders who serve others on a daily basis. Giving back isn't just about serving the community, but also highlighting others who also live a life of philanthropy.
On Thursday, Jan. 28, residents from throughout the county of San Bernardino joined at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario for the inaugural A Few Good Men Gala to honor seven distinguished business professionals for their philanthropic contributions and dedication to improving the community. The red carpet event benefited the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House, providing funds that will help keep families with critically-ill children close as they receive the care they need so they can heal and cope better together.
One family, the Shafers, show how their life has been impacted as a result of the work of Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House:
In January of 2008 Scott and Jennifer Shafer of Hesperia stayed at Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House when their son, Soren, was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome. Although Soren passed away at just 17 days old, the Shafer family remains grateful for the time they were able to spend with Soren.
Soon after Soren's passing Scott and Jennifer learned they were expecting another baby boy, Easton. Soon after his birth Easton developed Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and his family would once again find themselves finding comfort at the Ronald McDonald House.
During their time at the Ronald McDonald House Easton's condition became critical and they almost lost him. Over time, his condition improved and he was able to go home. To this day Jennifer believes that in addition to the great works by his doctors, Easton got better because his family was there throughout his recovery.
More recently the Shafer family returned to the Ronald McDonald House in November of 2015 when their son Landon was born two months early.
During her pregnancy Jennifer learned that Landon's kidneys were not functioning correctly and due to a blockage there was no amniotic fluid. The outlook was grim and the Shafer family was preparing for the worst.
Jennifer shares that even though the Ronald McDonald House was full at her family's time of need, the organization paid for a hotel room to accommodate the family's needs.
"I think that's kind of a testament to how important the expansion of the House is. So many people are turned away because there's just not enough room. The importance of being near your child is just unimaginable."
Exactly 8 years after their first stay at the Ronald McDonald House, they founded themselves in the same situation and wondered if they would be planning a funeral for their son. Landon spent two months in the NICU and underwent several surgeries and treatments. Jennifer was able to be with Landon everyday and Scott and their other children were able to visit. During their two months stay the Shafer family celebrated birthdays, Christmas, and Scott and Jennifer's 18th wedding anniversary.
On Jan. 13, 2016, Landon's original due date, he was released from the hospital and able to go home! Although he still has a long road ahead of him with many follow up visits and surgeries in the future, his family can rest assured knowing that they have a home away from home at the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House.
Through the annual A Few Good Men Gala, Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House strives to shine a light on local leaders living for others.
The honorees for this year's event included:

Class of 2016 Honoree - Dan Tate President, Don Ferrarese Foundation
Dan, the oldest of 4 was raised by a single mother at 23 years old.
Attending thirteen different schools, Dan had trouble assimilating to school life and was suspended or expelled from school over twenty times. Being the oldest, Dan was given a great deal of responsibility growing up, having a paper route since the age of ten, waking every morning at 4 a.m. to deliver newspapers before school.
The adversities of growing up were ironically the foundation upon which Dan developed a work ethic and drive to lead a life different from the one experienced as a child. Football and the United States Marine Corps were instrumental in Dan developing his ultimate character that has led to a life of success and personal prosperity.
Homeless one day, pushing his belongings in a shopping cart, Dan met his wife, Patti the next day he registered for college. Dan and Patti have been married for thirty years and have raised three children, who all have graduated college, one with a masters, one with a doctorate and the other a recent graduate of the University of San Diego.
He shares that one of his most profound role models in life, his high school football coach, instilled the principle in him that, "Life is not about how good you are, it's about the effort you put forward."
Dan coached sixty-two athletic teams and dedicated a large part of his life to charitable and community efforts. Dan and Patti started their first charity, Sara's Hope in 2013, which has contributed over $250,000 to local communities. In 2005, Dan and Patti started the Don Ferrarese Charitable Foundation to honor Don Ferrarese for his lifetime of community service. Since then, the Ferrarese Foundation has awarded $400,000 in scholarships, sponsored ten veteran tributes, serving over 10,000 and sponsored Santa's Sleigh Christmas, fulfilling the wish lists of over 2,000 local children in need.
Dan is now trying to lead an effort to develop after-school activity and development centers to engage local children with meaningful relationships and enjoys speaking to various groups on topics from personal responsibility to overcoming adversity.
