“This is a magical place, and a great place for great music. 70 years ago, the people of Redlands had the foresight and determination to create an orchestra unique to this place. We are excited and honored to celebrate that vision with you," said Ransom Wilson.
The Redlands Symphony performs six concerts during its regular season. All concerts are performed in Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Redlands.
November 16, 2019: An Evening of Firsts featuring the World Premiere of a new orchestral fanfare by Sean FRIAR, one of America’s up-and-coming composers. The piece was commissioned by the Redlands Symphony to mark the orchestras 70th Anniversary. “This new work will be fitting way to celebrate the Symphony’s 70 years of serving Redlands and the Inland Empire with wonderful orchestral music,” according to Maestro Wilson, “Sean’s work is creative and exciting. I know this piece will capture the spirit and uniqueness of Redlands.” The concert program will also include BEETHOVEN’S Symphony No. 1 in C major and Symphony No. 1, “Titan” by MAHLER.
December 14, 2019: A Classical Christmas will celebrate this joyful season in music and song featuring a program that includes RESPIGHI’S Three Botticelli Pictures, BRITTEN’S Men of Goodwill, TCHAIKOVSKY’S Suite from The Nutcracker, and DUKE ELLINGTON’S jazzy Nutcracker Suite. The program will end with a Christmas Sing-Along featuring traditional holiday favorites.
January 18, 2020: The String Serenade concert will feature HOLST’ S St. Paul’s Suite, Quatuor en Serenade by RAVEL and TCHAIKOVSKY’S Serenade for Strings. “I’ve wanted to feature our incredible string players in a concert for a long time,” Maestro Wilson explains, “This January concert will give them a chance to really shine.”
February 15, 2020: Maestro Wilson’s fascination with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart continues with a concert featuring two piano concertos performed by renown pianist, ANN-MARIE McDERMOTT. Ms. McDermott has performed as a soloist in concerts and recitals throughout the world and is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. “I’ve wanted to bring Ann-Marie’s phenomenal talent to the Redlands Symphony since I arrived,” Maestro Wilson says, “Her schedule finally worked with ours, and the audience will be the big winner. She’s amazing!” Ms. McDermott will perform MOZART’S Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, “Jeunehomme” as well as the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major. The program also includes the genius composer’s Symphony No. 40 in g minor.
March 21, 2020: The March concert captures the Passion and Tenderness of BRAHMS with the composer’s Academic Festival and his Symphony No. 4. The program will also feature the winner of the University of Redlands School of Music’s annual Concerto Competition, with the exact program determined by the outcome of that contest. “Brahms is one of those composers who manages to include the full range of human emotions in every work. As you can imagine, this puts him at the top of many people’s list of favorites. I can’t wait to experience Brahms’ world again!”
May 2, 2020: The season ends with a concert titled Celebrating America featuring the incomparable talent of PATRICK POSEY, performing JOHN ADAM’S Saxophone Concerto. “Patrick Posey is a remarkable musician and performer,” Wilson says, “He is a regular with the LA Philharmonic and other major orchestras throughout the country. His performance here in Redlands will be a first for this orchestra, but I’m certain it will not be his last.” This ambitious program also includes Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by JOAN TOWER, Miss Sally’s Party by WILLIAM GRANT STILL, Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes by AARON COPLAND, ending with COPLAND’S celebrated Fanfare for the Common Man.
